See You at the Pole

This past Wednesday at 7:00 a.m., about 50 students and 20 adults gathered around the flagpole in front of Jal High School for the annual “See You at the Pole” National Day of Student Prayer. “See You at the Pole” began as a yearly event in 1990 in Burleson, Texas, when a group of teenagers gathered to pray for spiritual awakening in schools, according to Baptist Press. The event is expressly student led and voluntary, without official endorsement by public schools, per constitutional law. While non-student adults usually participate in some fashion, the prayer meeting itself is led by students. At this year’s event at Jal High School, Pastor Will Humber of Calvary Baptist Church and Pastor James Flores of First Baptist Church were present, with First Baptist supplying donuts. Pastor John Earp of Jal Church of God was able to stop briefly on his morning school bus route while the prayer meeting was already underway, and definitely was in agreeing in prayer with the meeting.
