Only one of the top nine counties in Permian Basin added a drilling rig in the past week, according to Baker Hughes in its weekly report of Aug. 11.  Lea County (64 rigs) and Eddy (47) in New Mexico lead Permian, but both their counts were unchanged in the past week.  Other basin leaders were Martin with 40 rigs (down 1), Midland with 30 (down 2), Reeves with 25 (down 1), Loving with 22 (unchanged), Ward with 18 (down 1), and Glasscock (unchanged) and Reagan (up 1) each with 10.

Baker Hughes reported 327 rigs in Permian Basin (down 2 in past week, down 19 in past year), 312 in Texas (down 1 in past week, down 60 in past week), 113 in New Mexico (unchanged in past week, up 9 in past year) and 654 in U.S. (down 5 in past week, down 109 in past year).  New Mexico’s count matches a 2023 high.

Louisiana is No. 3 among states with 48 rigs (down 2 in past week, down 16 in past year) followed by Oklahoma with 40 (up 1 in past week, down 25 in past year) and North Dakota with 35 (unchanged in past week, down 2 in past year).  Eagle Ford is No. 2 among regions with 53 rigs (down 1 in past week, down 19 in past year) followed by Haynesville with 44 (unchanged in past week, down 25 in past year), Williston with 35 (unchanged in past week, down 4 in past year) and Marcellus with 31 (down 2 in past week, down 4 in past year).
