Remembering the Fallen
By John Earp
This past Monday, a few dozen people gathered to observe Memorial Day at Fourth St. Park. Joe Cole was the primary organizer of the event this year. About a dozen veterans were in attendance. According to tradition, Old Glory, which had been lowered to half staff at 6:00 a.m. that morning, was to be lowered all the way and then raised up to full staff at noon. As the flag was lowered, veterans stood under and held it up, preventing it from touching the ground, as per protocol. Cole gave a brief speech and thanked everyone for coming to the somewhat impromptu event.
