By John Earp
Tuesday evening in the Panther Gym, the Jal High School Panther Boys Basketball Team (12-15 overall; 6-4 in district; 3rd place) took on the Loving Falcons (2-21 overall; 2-8 in district) in the first round of the District Tournament. The Panthers dominated from the start, with Jal leading 36-17 at halftime. At the beginning of the fourth period, the Panthers led 46-24.
Daniel Ornelas was the high scorer for the Panthers Tuesday night, with a total of 18 points. Zadyn Lujan was a close second in scoring Tuesday, with a total of 16 points in the game. Eyan Faulkner scored a total of 7 points. Davian Navarette and Zaine Vega each scored 8 points for the Panthers. Steven Cervantes scored 6, and was especially effective on the rebound Tuesday night. Jayden Cervantes scored 3. The final score was 66-35.

The Panthers take on the Eunice Cardinals (12-12 overall; 7-3 in district; 2nd place) Thursday the 26th at 6:00 p.m. in Eunice for the second round of the District Tournament. The Panthers narrowly won 26-24 over Eunice on January 29th, but then just as narrowly lost to Eunice on February 17th, so this will no doubt be a real battle between these two archrival teams.
