Long-time Jal Elementary preschool teacher, Ms. Andrea May, retired this year. She said she couldn’t remember exactly how many years she had been working as a preschool teacher, but that as she recalled, it was something like 23 years.

May says her favorite part of her career has been working with the children. She said some of her students have grown up, gotten married, and then some of their kids have come through her class. She said she recently met a waitress at a restaurant in Hobbs who said she remembered her being her teacher in preschool.

May worked in preschool and also with the developmentally delayed. May says she plans to continue working with the children at the Church of God, where she has served for many years as children’s minister. She plans to do some substitute teaching in the future and looks forward to being able to do what she wants, not having to work every day, being able to work on her house, and being able to visit her grandchildren more often. She says retirement is a big deal, and she doesn’t want to just sit home and do nothing. “As long as I’m able to go and do, I want to
