Jal Lego League teams do well in Alamogordo

By John Earp

Last weekend, students from Jal Schools traveled to Alamogordo to participate in a qualifying tournament for Lego League, with the 6th grade team qualifying for the state competition to be held in Albuquerque on February 10th. The teams are led by Jal teachers, Johnny Estrada, Marcy Butts, and Antoinette Trevino.

From the Jal School’s Facebook page: Congratulations to the 5th and 6th grade Lego Robotics Teams that participated in the Lego Robotic Competition in the Alamogordo Qualifying Tournament. The 5th grade team (Wimpy Kids) missed the qualifying mark by a fraction. The 6th grade teams (The Vincent Van Legos and The Comets) qualified for the state competition that will be held in Albuquerque on February 10th. Congratulations to all the teams for their hard work and determination.”

From Krystal Estrada’s Facebook page: “The first Lego League 2023-2024 Jal Robotics. We are so proud of these kids and teachers, they did amazing and learn so much every year. Lego League is about researching, presenting, and Lego building and competitions that promote STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) to inspire creativity, building, engineering, art, architecture, math, critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork, etc…This year’s competition focus was art. These kids chose an amazingly talented local Jal, NM artist Brian Norwood for their inspiration and presentation. They were amazed by his exquisite paintings, sculptures, life size teepee art, and adventures.
