Ehrenfelt Wins Elementary Spelling Bee
By John Earp
Wednesday morning in the Jal Elementary Cafeteria, the Jal Elementary Spelling Bee was held.
Sixth grader, Kairi Ehrenfelt won the bee after eight rounds, winning by correctly spelling the word, “Goat.” Kairi says her favorite subject is reading. She will participate along with Elijah Earp, winner of the Jal Junior High Spelling Bee, in the Lea County Spelling Bee. Natalie Carrales was the runner up, and will serve as the alternate in case Ehrenfelt is unable to attend the county spelling bee.
Some of the words the students were required to spell in the bee included basket, tender, paste, melon, farmer, parent, tail, hockey, insects, teeth, shortcut, bait, lure, cluster, forest, hollow, spinning, baffling, search, remind, mango, coral, jangle, shimmer, blossoms, swampy, studded, focus, lessons, moment, ajar, faithful, triple, satin, ahoy, signal, answer, shuffle, dollop, minnows, silver, before, circus, writing, kitchen, sugar, awkward, sweet, seep, wheels, faint, fruit, roam, and goats. This list was compiled from the audio recording of the bee, so it might be less than perfectly accurate. A request for the printed list of the words used in the bee Wednesday, which had been read aloud over the public address system, was inexplicably denied.
Spellers participating in the bee this year included Kairi Ehrenfelt, Paisley Faulkner, Ricardo Franco, Lia Rangel, Chloe Ramos, Jorge Salazar, Nazelya Emerson, Sofia Dardon, Nedah Linman, Britta Cook, Emery Estrada, Diego Flores, Viamey Garcia, Jorge Caballero, Levi Thorman, Oliver Robedo, Mia Quezada, Rogelio Franco, Sebastian Martinez, Alondra Estrada, Alec Torres, Jonathan Villa, Brooklyn Vega, Celeste Avila, Aileyn Roman, Angel Alvarez, Paige Faulkner, Mauricio Zavala, Luke Lujan, Caydence DeWitt, Adian Compton, Frederick Seifts, Mya Thorne, Snow Garcia, Alejandro Gonzalez, Gael Alonso, Victor Tipton, Oswaldo Duran, Alivia Compton, Alekza Romero, Mattie Ramos, Natalie Carrales, and Lucas Valeriano.
Mrs. Jackie Ford served as Pronouncer. Mrs. Nancy Savoie and Mr. Johnny Estrada served as judges.
