Demolition Begins on Former El Paso Building
By John Earp
This week, demolition has begun on the former Jal Police Department building which originally served as the administration building for El Paso Natural Gas Company. An ic0nic landmark of the city, dating back to the glory days of El Paso Natural Gas Company, will be completely gone soon.
Most recently, a significant portion of the building served to house the Jal Police Department, including dispatch services, city jail, and municipal court. A structural examination of the building last year determined that the only part salvageable in the building was the brick façade, with serious foundational and structural issues making any potential renovation of the structure cost prohibitive.
A new building, which will be leased to an electrical company, is to be constructed by the City at the location once the old building has been completed demolished and cleared from the site.
