By John Earp

This past Monday, at the meeting of the Jal School Board, Jal Elementary School fifth grader Kelley Chapman was presented with an award for being runner-up in the Lea County Spelling Bee. Karen Komar and Superintendent Brian Snider presented Kelley with her award from the school district. Tuesday morning, Chapman said she reads a lot and is looking forward to competing in the spelling bee again next year. She said she had to take an online test in order to qualify for the state spelling bee in Albuquerque, but did not make the cut for that. She says she felt happy to be recognized with an award from the school district.
